Tampa coffee shops top Yelp’s 100 Top Coffee Shops list

From piping-hot pour-overs and espressos to iced banana lattes and ice-cream-sweetened affogatos, Yelp got us covered with the latest coffee trends at the top coffee shops in the U.S. on Yelp’s 100 Top Coffee Shops list.

Coffee lovers are line up at their favorite coffee shops for a small bite and the latest coffee experiences: trendy new flavors, insta-worthy latte art, the freshest in-house roasted beans, exotic coffee styles from around the world, and sometimes just a sense of community. This year’s list of 100 Top Coffee Shops takes you on a tour from coast to coast, including a few Tampa coffee shops, where you can find everything you look for in a cup, just in time for National Coffee Day on Sept. 29.

Here are some of the hot and cool coffee trends Yelp spotted:

  • Matcha madness: Gen Z, in particular, is crazy for matcha. Searches on Yelp back in March were up 180% over the previous year. The caffeinated, antioxidant-rich green tea has become so popular, it’s overtaking coffee sales at shops like Makario Coffee Roasters(#8) in Everett, Washington, which recently added ceremonial matcha (the highest grade) to its menu. At Pangolin Café (#7) in Reno, Nevada, an iced Strawberry Matcha leapt to their top three best-sellers.
  • Banana lattes and einspanners: Two trending specialty drinks, banana-flavored coffee drinks and European einspanners, are drawing lines at top coffee shops. Yelp searches for “banana bread latte” were up almost 6,300% in July (with additional spikes for “banana latte” up 1,573% and “banana cold foam” up 600%). Yelpers give praise to Cassel Earth Coffee (#6) in Irvine, California, for having the perfect banana latte flavor. Yelp searches for “einspanner,”a Viennese coffee with an espresso base and a layer of sweetened cream, are up 1,145% compared to last year. Yelpers have found one they love (both for taste and looks) at Makario Coffee Roasters(#8).
  • Coffee and community: Coffee shops are becoming the iconic community hangout — the place where baristas know your order and your name. Mate Conmigo (#4) in Los Angeles, California, gets plenty of Yelper praise for it’s comfy environment, while A.T. Oasis Coffee & Tea Shop(#10) in Phoenix, Arizona, goes a step further, inviting locals to a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony on the first Saturday of every month.
  • The next big thing?: When it comes to coffee trends, the sky’s the limit! Whatever a coffeehouse owner can imagine may show up on the menu and go viral. Peeking into the future, shops are adding hojicha, a roasted version of matcha with a toasty, nutty flavor that has the same antioxidants but a lower caffeine content. (It’s already at a few shops on our list, including Cassel Earth Coffee (#6) in Irvine, California, and Tokyo Premium Bakery (#71) in Denver, Colorado.) Also on the rise: cloud-top coffee, mushroom coffee, banana collagen add-ons, and more.

Whether every day is coffee day for you, you’re celebrating National Coffee Day on Sept. 29, or International Coffee Day on Oct. 1, there’s plenty of spots to sip, slurp, or linger.

What Yelpers said: “First time having a Mango Bing Soo Shaved Snow, My fiance and I shared it, since its a bit big, it was so good, not too sweet, the Shaved cream melts in your mouth like a cloud. It is good for a very hot weather. The owner, who served us was really friendly and nice! She was very attentive, answers our questions with a smile. She also explained How the Bing Soo Shaved Ice is made. I would love to go back again and try another flavours of the Bing Soo. Other than the boba milk Teas and Bing Soo, they sell other Korean sweet/snacks like corn dogs, waffles and sparkly drinks (not soda/pop) The food all looked scrumptous, I totally recommend to try it.”-Marielle Mae T.
